Biography

Ulrich Krotz is Research Professor at the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI), and Faculty Associate at the Centre de Recherches Internationales (CERI) at Sciences Po Paris, where he also teaches European and international affairs. He currently serves as Pierre Keller Visiting Professor at the Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University.

He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University, and has taught at Oxford University, Brown, Sciences Po Paris, and the European University Institute (EUI), where he also has acted as the founding director of the research programme Europe in the World: International Relations, International Security, World Politics in the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. He has held research positions at Harvard, the EUI, Oxford, and Princeton.

He is the author of Shaping Europe: France, Germany, and Embedded Bilateralism from the Elysée Treaty to Twenty-First Century Politics (with Joachim Schild) (Oxford University Press, 2013; revised and updated paperback edition 2015; Chinese edition 2020; Albanian edition 2021); History and Foreign Policy in France and Germany (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015); Flying Tiger: International Relations Theory and the Politics of Advanced Weapons (Oxford University Press, 2011), and contributing co-editor of Europe’s Cold War Relations: The EC Towards a Global Role (with Kiran Klaus Patel and Federico Romero) (Bloomsbury, hardcover 2020; paperback 2021). He is currently completing a book monograph on the on the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and Europe’s engagement in twenty-first century world politics.

His articles have appeared in many of the leading journals in international relations and European politics, including the European Journal of International RelationsForeign Policy AnalysisInternational Affairs, International Security, the Journal of Common Market Studies, the Journal of European Public PolicyWest European Politics, and World Politics.
