Political Racism and the Case of Brexit

This course will discuss the arguments of Martin Shaw's new book Political Racism: Brexit and Its Aftermath. The first session will deal with racism as a social-scientific concept, the transformations in the understanding of it in the twentieth century, the concept of political racism and its modalities (strategic, popular, policy etc.), the role of political racism in the contemporary far right, nativism and 'selective racism'. The second session will apply this perspective to the case of Brexit and its aftermath, discussing the historical role of political racism in the UK, racism and Brexit ideology, political racism in the mobilisations for Brexit and the 2016 referendum, and its consequences for the form of Brexit which resulted, and for the rise and evolution of the Johnson regime in the UK.
