VI CIED

The VI International Conference of Development Studies (VI CIED) is an initiative of the Spanish Network of Development Studies (REEDES- Red Española de Estudios del Desarrollo) and it is organized by the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI). The Conference will be held on 8 and 10 June 2022 at the IBEI facilities and at the Ciutadella campus of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). It is open to researchers, practitioners and social organizations from different countries, particularly REEDES members, who wish to present their recent research related to the field of development studies.

The backbone of the VI CIED will be the peace-security-development nexus that has been reinforced with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and its multiple economic and social derivations. This nexus encompasses a wide range of issues included in the wider concept of human security: health, vulnerability and resilience; food security; armed conflict and its repercussions; gender violence and violence associated with organized crime; equity; digital human rights; and, in general, everything that protects and guarantees human survival and reduces vulnerability to armed conflict and violence.

The conference is structured around six general sessions – an opening session, four plenary sessions and a closing session – as well as fourteen thematic lines. The peace-security-development nexus is the focus of the opening session and the plenary sessions. In particular, coverage will be given to topics such as the role of international cooperation and the 2030 Agenda; the current state of human security in Latin America; health, care and poverty; and cybersecurity and digital human rights. The closing session will create a space for discussion with the participation of policymakers in the areas of international cooperation and development.

In general, the thematic lines reflect the areas of interest of REEDES researchers, actors and member institutions. They offer a wide range of approaches and issues related to development, including but not limited to climate change and biodiversity, natural resources, migration and ethnicity, poverty and inequality, education policy and globalization, feminism, and humanitarian action. While this is not a conference on the impact and aftermath of COVID-19, discussion of its implications for the developing world will be a recurring theme in the plenaries and thematic lines.

In short, it is a scientific and academic meeting seeking to integrate contributions from different thematic and methodological areas, international in its nature, of great interest to all those involved in the current debate and practice on development and its relationship to the problems of society and global governance.
