Master's in International Security

Syllabus

The course syllabus presents an innovative structure, stimulating continuous learning, with highly-qualified IBEI teaching staff, associate faculty from the three universities that jointly offer the degree – the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the Universitat de Barcelona, and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, as well as other international academic institutions.

The programme consists of 60 ECTS and includes three types of courses and a final research project:

  • Core courses: 22 ECTS credits
  • International Security elective courses: A minimum of 8 ECTS credits and a maximum of 28 ECTS credits
  • Other electives: A maximum of 20 ECTS credits
  • Final research project dissertation: 10 ECTS credits 

The core courses provide students with the theoretical knowledge and research methods skills necessary to explore problems of international security in a rigorous and systematic way. A wide range of specialized electives help students deepen their understanding of international security in areas, such as peace process and conflict resolution, civil wars, intelligence studies, nuclear weapons, or terrorism. These are supplemented by electives in international relations, development, public policy, and regional studies.

In addition, students can interact with visiting scholars, government experts, and practitioners who give regular public lectures and research seminars at IBEI.
