2020 edition | POLNET: Advanced Social Network Analysis

18-21 February, 2020 POLNET Barcelona.
Advanced Social Network Analysis

The POLNET school has been offering an extensive range of social network analysis (SNA) courses for two decades now. SNA is a promising methodological tool and theoretical approach and its use has increased exponentially since the school was founded. Social network analysis offers numerous quantitative applications in the field of political, sociological and organizational sciences. These methodological tools, practices, theoretical assignments, and practical problems play a central role in this POLNET seminar.

This edition will be organized in Barcelona as a joint initiative of IBEI and Universität Konstanz. Our intention is to provide the participants with knowledge on basic functions of social network analysis such as centrality analysis (which actors are central in a given network?), subgroup analysis (do specific actors share a particularly large amount of connections with each other?), or discourse network analysis. In addition to an overview of theories and data in political science network research, the most important network analysis techniques are presented. A central component of the course is its practical introduction to the programs RDNA and Visone. Moreover, we cover advanced SNA techniques such as QAP (Quadratic Assignment Procedure) and ERGMs (Exponential Random Graphs Models). Check the complete programme of the school here.

This workshop is suitable for graduate students (Master’s and doctoral levels), as well as for researchers with an interest in the empirical study of social and political networks.

The POLNET 2020 Barcelona team consists of highly qualified International lecturers, who bring in their expertise and knowledge on the subject. The POLNET faculty includes Carlos Bravo, Jacint Jordana, Lukáš LehotskýJosé Luis Molina, Melanie Nagel, Petr Ocelík, Keiichi Satoh, Volker Schneider and Annie Waldherr.
