The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), through the Integration and Trade Sector (INT) and the Institute for the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean (INTAL), with the collaboration of the Office in Europe, launched in October 2002 the Euro-Latin Study Network on Integration and Trade (ELSNIT).

The main objectives of the Network are to generate research, studies and debate on integration and trade issues relevant to Latin America and the Caribbean, draw on the rich European experience, and increase interaction between European and Latin American researchers. European centers/institutes with a high degree of expertise in the areas of integration and trade, at both the international and European levels, conformed the ELSNIT Steering Committee.

Ten Annual Conferences have taken place since the launching of the Network (Barcelona, Spain 2003, Florence, Italy 2004, Kiel, Germany 2005, Paris, France 2006, Barcelona, Spain 2007, Florence, Italy 2008, Kiel, Germany 2009, Paris, France, 2010, St Gallen Switzerland, 2011, Milan, Italy, 2012). The Eleventh Annual Conference of the Euro-Latin Study Network on Integration and Trade (ELSNIT) will focus on the Internationalization of Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) and will take place at the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) in Barcelona, Spain, on October 17-18, 2013. The conference will be hosted by IBEI under the sponsorship of, and in co-organization with the IDB.

The conference will discuss the papers selected through a call for papers launched in March 2013 in Europe and in Latin America, on the basis of a decision by the Steering Committee. These papers examine the patterns and determinants of the internationalization of SMEs along the economic, institutional, and social dimensions.
