The Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) invites applications for a research assistant to work on research related to ethnic politics and nationalism. The position is funded under the Ayudas Ramón y Cajal incorporation programme held by Dr. Matthias vom Hau and funded by the Secretaría de Estado de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación (RYC-2014-16774).

We are seeking candidates at the post-graduate / pre-doctoral level with a background in political science, sociology, development studies or international relations, and the ability to conduct historical research and pursue theoretically-informed case studies. Fluency in both English and Spanish, excellent writing skills, and experience in the analysis of qualitative data are a requirement. Working knowledge of quantitative analytical tools (SPSS, STATA or R) and experience in dataset construction are additional assets.

The candidate will contribute to projects on (a) the contestation and transformation of official national ideologies across the world and (b) the intersection between indigenous movements and natural resource conflicts in Latin America. His/her specific duties will include researching and writing up case studies on transformations of nationalism worldwide as well as working on various papers and datasets related to indigenous land rights in Argentina. The candidate will also be involved in copyediting and background research like literature reviews and minor administrative tasks.

The project has a built-in capacity-building component and the candidate will be invited to co-author papers for conference presentations and journal submissions to support his/her future career development. The work commitment is 35 hours/week for 10 months. The start date is flexible but should be no later than September 2019. Remuneration is commensurate with a PhD grant under the Spanish government fellowship system.
