Vacancy: Research Assistant - CLOSED

The Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) invites applications for a research assistant to work on a research project entitled “Expectations and effects of regional independence: A comparison of Catalonia and Scotland”, granted by the Institut d’Estudis de l’Autogovern (IEA) and funded through the Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts i de Recerca (AGAUR).

Candidates should be in possession of or close to finishing a master’s degree or equivalent in a field such as economics, statistics, political science or international relations. Experience of Qualtrics or a similar survey software and experience in text analysis and statistical analysis would be highly valued. Fluency in English is essential, and ability to understand written Catalan and Spanish is preferable.

The research assistant’s tasks will include literature review, analysis of existing publicly available data, preparation of the two case studies, baseline text analysis of media, programming surveys, assistance in analysis of the survey results, along with any other tasks that assist the research team.

The work commitment is flexible, between full-time for 5.5 months to 18 hour/week for 12 months. The start date is flexible but must be before September 2018. Remuneration is commensurate with a PhD grant.

The post will be based at IBEI in Barcelona and under the supervision of an international team of researchers (Laia Balcells, Georgetown University; Jose Fernández-Albertos, Juan March Institute; Alex Kuo, University of Oxford), with the direct supervision of Lesley-Ann Daniels (IBEI).

Applications must be submitted by 8 June 2018 and should include a letter of interest and current CV that includes contact information for two referees. The application should be saved as one PDF document and sent to Carlos Sanchez (csanchez@ibei.org). Candidates will be notified only if they are successful.

This position is ideal for an advanced graduate student looking to get paid learning experience about academic project development, survey design, and data analysis about issues related to regional politics, public opinion, and nationalism.

For any questions regarding the position, please contact Lesley-Ann Daniels (ldaniels@ibei.org).
