In this talk, Foreign Minister Victòria Alsina will provide an overview of Catalonia´s relationship with the United States, beginning with the arrival of American diplomats in Barcelona in the late 18th century, through to the present day. She will also relate some of her personal experiences and impressions of the United States in her current role as Foreign Minister, her previous role as Head of the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to the United States of America and Canada, and her academic posts at Harvard and New York University.

Victòria Alsina-Burgués is the Minister of Foreign Action and Open Government of Catalonia. She has led the public-private partnership task force at the World Economic Forum (G20 Global Smart Cities Alliance on Technology Governance). Due to her current public service position she has taken a leave of absence from her roles at New York University as Industry Associate Professor and Academic Director at the NYU Center for Urban Science and Progress, Associated Faculty at the Technology, Culture and Society Department, and Senior Fellow at The Governance Lab (The GovLab). She has also co-chaired the Consultation and Outreach Group at the Council of Europe Artificial Intelligence Committee, and coordinated the post-Covid-19 strategy promoted by the Government of Catalonia. Previously, she has been the Head of the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to the United States of America and Canada. Alsina-Burgues also worked at the Harvard Kennedy School as an Associate at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, Democracy Fellow at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, and Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

This seminar series is organised within the program on American politics and international security by Institut d’Estudis Nord-americans (IEN) and IBEI.
