Biography

Nancy Thede holds a PhD in anthropology from l'Université de Montréal. She is professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science at l'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) since 2004. She is Nycole Turmel Chair on Public Spheres and Political Innovation since 2009 (www.turmel.uqam.ca), a research centre focusing on the role of social movements in the political transformations underway in Latin America.
Prior to her academic career, Nancy Thede worked as a researcher and consultant in the field of international development cooperation and undertook field research in various countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia. She was coordinator of the democratic development programme at Rights & Democracy (International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development) from 1993 to 2003. Her recent publications concern local democratisation, decentralisation and human rights, security and development and Canadian aid policy for development and democratisation.
