In this presentation, Carolina Guzmán-Valenzuela will examine patterns of international collaboration in the social sciences in Latin America. Although Latin America is not a large player in the production of knowledge in the global landscape, it has a rich tradition of research in the social sciences with a growing volume of publications over the last decade. Drawing on data extracted from two well-known databases (Web of Science and SciELO) between 2002-2018, Carolina Guzmán-Valenzuela will discuss the main publication and collaboration patterns understood as joint articles (both domestic and international). Results show that the patterns of research collaboration in the social sciences in Latin America are shaped by both disciplinary and geopolitical factors so that knowledge produced in the social sciences and specifically in the so-called global South - such as Latin America (LATAM) - tends to remain largely invisible to international audiences. Implications for international research collaboration will be discussed.

Professor Carolina Guzmán-Valenzuela is interested in the study of higher education. For the last 12 years, she has been conducting research on the role of the universities in the twenty-first century. Currently, she is leading a national project on knowledge production in the social sciences and the humanities in Latin America financed by Fondecyt-ANID Chile (Fondecyt 1200633).

*This activity has limited capacity. Registration is required to have a guaranteed seat and be able to attend the face-to-face modality. Virtual attendees will receive the access link by email.
