Governing digital networks and services in cities and metropolitan areas: possibilities and challenges of 5G connectivity

6 hour course by Alvaro Artigas (Sciences Po CEE)

  • Schedule: 20, 21 & 22 June (09:00 - 11:00)

The goal of this course is to provide an entry point to the understanding of 5G networks, related technologies and the challenges they pose to services in cities. The governance of these networks has a direct impact on a large portfolio of city applications with various requirements ranging from high reliability to ultra-low latency going through high bandwidth and mobility. The relationship between 5G networks within information and communication technologies (ICTs) and spatial planning, is expanding the concept of “smart” from the usual scale of urban projects and cities to the regional dimension.

The course will look into the use of 5G networks for the promotion, management, and dissemination of an integrated system of services, exploring the spatial impacts of digital services and the specific governance challenges they present (regional, urban, local). It will more fundamentally address how an array of new digital services can potentially improve urban livability and efficiency by integrating urban communities through the adoption of enhanced collaborative instruments.
