The politics of accountability

6 hour course by Yannis Papadopoulos (Université de Lausanne)

  • Schedule: 22-23 June, 2023 (10:00–13:00)

This course will cover core topics addressed by research on political and administrative accountability. It will first focus on accountability in the democratic state, exploring how both governments and bureaucracies are held accountable, and with what effect. In a second session the approach will “scale up” to survey the main accountability issues in the European Union and at the global governance level.

The sessions will take place in an interactive way and require from the participants to read in advance the material that will be discussed in class. Each session is divided in two subsessions with distinct reading material.

Yannis Papadopoulos is a professor of public policy at the University of Lausanne. He has extensively researched on accountability and democracy, including on the impact of governance transformations and on European integration. He is the author of Understanding Accountability in Democratic Governance (Cambridge University Press, 2023) and of Democracy in Crisis? Politics, Governance and Policy (Palgrave, 2013); lead editor of the Handbook of Accountability Research (Edgar Elgar, forthcoming) and co-editor (with Deirdre Curtin and Peter Mair) of Accountability and European Governance (Routledge, 2011).
