What is Science and Technology Diplomacy?

Science Diplomacy, Innovation Diplomacy, Techplomacy, STI Diplomacy and SciTech Diplomacy are all different ways of referring to the same thing: the use of scientific, technological and academic collaborations among countries, regions and societies to address common issues and to build sound international partnerships. Experts use a wide variety of definitions for this concept, nevertheless, science diplomacy has become an umbrella term that includes several kinds of research-based, scientific, academic and engineering exchanges among nations and societies. Barcelona: a hotspot for science and global affairs

This comprehensive and first-of-its-kind training course in Science & Technology Diplomacy will take place from 3rd to 7th July 2023 in one of world’s innovation hotspots: Barcelona. Hosted by IBEI, at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Ciutadella Campus (UPF), the Summer School is located at the heart of Barcelona, only a 10 minute walk from the sea and the innovation district 22@.

With world-class research institutions, Barcelona hosts facilities such as the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, the ALBA Synchrotron or the National Genome Analysis Center, the headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean, the UN-HABITAT City Resilience Profiling Programme (UN-HABITAT/CRPP) and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). Barcelona is among the top innovative hubs worldwide, the 3rd non-state capital in terms of consular representation and one of the leading cities in global municipalism – the perfect place for science and technology diplomacy.

Evaluation and ECTS

A minimum attendance of 90% to all sessions is mandatory in order to obtain the certificate.  In case participants require or are willing to obtain academic credits (4 ECTS) for the Summer School, they must request so during their application and submit a short final essay after completing the School.
