The Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) invites applications for a Research Assistant to work on the research project “Building resilient peace: Micro-level resistence to shocks (RESPAX)” funded under Programa Estatal de Generación de Conocimiento y Fortalecimiento Científico y Tecnológico del Sistema de I+D, Proyectos de I+D de Generación de Conocimiento, Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades. RESPAX investigates the drivers of stable peace at the micro-level.

We are seeking candidates at the post-graduate/pre-doctoral level with a background in political science, international relations or a social science. Fluency in English, excellent writing skills, and experience with quantitative data collection and analysis are essential, including familiarity with one of the major statistical packages, like R or Stata. The ability to conduct qualitative research and a working knowledge of qualitative research methods are additional assets.

The candidate will contribute to RESPAX by analyzing the delivery of referendums during moments of contestation or peace processes. The specific duties will include researching and coding the context and consequences of the implementation of the referendums, writing up case studies, analysis of the database, and working on various papers related to the project. The candidate will also be responsible for copyediting and background research such as literature reviews, as well as minor administrative tasks.

The project has a built-in training and capacity-building component and is ideal for candidates who seek to develop skills and insights related to the conduct and design advanced research projects. Upon successful performance, the candidate will be invited to co-author papers for conferences and journal submissions to support her/his career development. The work commitment is 20 hours/week, but this can be flexible for a suitable candidate, for 6 months, with the possibility of extension by up to one year. The start date is flexible but ideally no later than end December 2021. Remuneration is commensurate with a PhD grant under the Spanish government fellowship system.
