The Fred Halliday Award 2022

The first edition of the Fred Halliday Award was celebrated within the framework of the Barcelona Summer School of the Mediterranean and Middle East, a joint initiative of IBEI (Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals) and Blanquerna - Universitat Ramon Llull (Faculty of Communications and International Relations).

The ceremony was held on July 4 at CCCB after the Keynote lecture by Deniz Kandiyoti (SOAS): From Modernization to Democratization: Women's Movements and Gender Activism in the Middle East and North Africa. It was conducted by the Academic Director of the School Umut Özkırımlı, Senior Research Fellow at IBEI, Professor at Blanquerna - Universitat Ramon Llull and Senior Research Associate at CIDOB.

The award was given to Jamie Allinson, who is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh where he teaches courses on the politics and IR of the Middle East. He is the author of The Age of Counter-Revolution: States and Revolutions in the Middle East (Cambridge University Press, 2022) and The Struggle for the State in Jordan (IB Tauris, 2016, co-winner of the Jadaliyya Political Economy Book Prize). He is also a member of the Salvage editorial collective.

This award aims to commemorate Fred Halliday’s tremendous contributions to the field of International Relations. This award is created to recognize and support an outstanding mid-career scholar whose research focuses on the study of the Mediterranean and/or the Middle East. More information
