Descripción
Development policy is one of the central pillars of the EU’s external action, alongside foreign, security, and trade policies. The European Union and its member states account for the largest share of total official development assistance (ODA) in the world. This course will focus of the EU’s policy towards 79 developing countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific (the so-called OACPS) and provide an overview of both historical as well as the current features of the EU’s development cooperation with this set of countries. We will, in particular, look at the Samoa Agreement which was signed 2023 and how it is connected with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. We will also examine the functioning of the main financial instruments tied to the EU’s ODA, and explore in-depth cases of EU cooperation in the developing world.
