NEW Seminar Series on the US Foreign Policy_CAPÇALERA

Dr. Andrew Gawthorpe will address the degree to which continuity versus change exists in US foreign policy in recent presidential administrations. The talk will emphasize the continuity of the ‘imperial presidency’, highlighting the extent to which the ‘outlier’ Trump administration departed from traditional US policies, or not, as well as providing an assessment of the Biden administration relative to its predecessor.

Dr. Andrew Gawthorpe is a Lecturer at Leiden University focusing on modern American history and foreign policy. His first book was a history of American nation-building during the Vietnam War and is available from Cornell University Press. Andrew writes widely for popular media as well as academic publications and hosts a podcast about American politics, foreign policy and culture called America Explained. He previously held a research fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy School, was a teaching fellow at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, and held a civil service appointment in the British Cabinet Office.

This seminar series is organised within the program on American politics and international security by Institut d’Estudis Nord-americans (IEN) and IBEI.
