Vacancy: Research Assistant

The Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) invites applications for a research assistant under the research project “Middle Income Growth and Development: Social and Political Implications of the Developing World’s ‘New Middle Classes’” funded under the Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica y Técnica y de Innovación 2017-2020, Proyectos de I+D+i Excelencia y Retos 2017. The specific research under this call will focus on the interaction between socio-economic mobility experiences, demographic change and ethnic group relations in sub-Saharan Africa.

We are seeking candidates at post-graduate / pre-doctoral level, preferably with strong quantitative training in economics, political science, demography, or related disciplines. Demonstrable working knowledge of Stata and ability to handle larger cross-sectional and longitudinal data sets are a requirement. Basic to advanced user and programming skills in R and GIS software (ArcGis, Q-Gis) are an additional asset.

The duties of the candidate will include cleaning and coding (where necessary) of household survey, panel, and census data sets, support to statistical and econometric analysis, as well as background research like literature reviews and minor administrative tasks. The candidate will also be involved in matching survey and census information with geo-coded historical and geographic data sets using existing GIS shape files. He/she will do so herself or in collaboration with more specialized team members, depending on her qualifications. The project has a built-in capacity-building component and the candidate will be invited to co-author papers for conference presentations and journal submissions to support her future career development.

The work commitment is flexible, between 10-20 hour/week for 6 months, with possibility of extension by up to one year upon satisfactory performance. The start date is flexible but should be no later than April 2019. Remuneration is commensurate with a PhD grant under the Spanish government fellowship system.

Applications should include:

  • A letter of interest
  • Current CV that includes contact information for two referees.
  • Transcripts for relevant academic degrees.

Applications must be submitted by 18 February 2019. The application should be saved as one pdf document and sent to Carlos Sanchez (csanchez@ibei.org).

For any questions regarding the position, please contact Frank Borge Wietzke (fbwietzke@ibei.org).
