The Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) invites applications for a Predoctoral Position to begin in September-October 2021 for three years on a full-time basis.

The successful candidate will contribute to the research project ENGAGE (Envisioning a New Governance Architecture for a Global Europe), funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme. ENGAGE comprises 13 universities and research institutes across Europe and is led by ESADE. In parallel, the candidate is expected to enrol in a PhD programme in one of IBEI’s partner universities and to complete the PhD under the supervision of Prof. Robert Kissack.

Interested candidates should send a research proposal related to the role of the European Union as a global actor, with an emphasis on EU foreign and security policy. They must possess a Master’s in Political Science, International Relations or European Studies and have a background in EU foreign policy. Fluency in English is essential, both orally and written. Excellent writing and personal skills and an ability to contribute to collaborative research projects are also essential for this position. Working knowledge of other European languages would be preferable. The successful candidate will need to be based in Barcelona for the duration of the project.

Besides completing their Ph.D., the successful candidate will be involved in other tasks within the ENGAGE project, such as a study on national and European parliamentary perceptions regarding enhanced EU external action. Therefore, experience with the collection and analysis of qualitative datasets is an additional asset.

Remuneration is commensurate with a Ph.D. grant under the Spanish government fellowship system. The start date should be no later than 1 October 2021.
