The Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) invites applications for a two-year post-doctoral position on a project entitled “REPGOV: Representative Government through Democratic Governance”. The project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant and led by Professor Anthony Bertelli, IBEI Senior Research Associate and Sherwin-Whitmore Professor of Public Policy and Political Science at Pennsylvania State University.

What is the project about? REPGOV emerges from ideas at the core of Professor Bertelli’s recent book, Democracy Administered: How Public Administration Shapes Representative Government (Cambridge University Press, 2021, https://doi.org/10.1017/9781316755167). More information can be found at https://wp.me/p1C7QG-9H

What is the role of the post-doctoral researcher? The successful applicant will be a core member of the REPGOV team. Specifically, the researcher will contribute to the theory-building component of the project, which connects democratic values to the structure of public administration and the behaviors of those who practice it.

What are the requirements for the positions? Applicants must receive the PhD in political science, sociology or a cognate subject before the start date. Demonstrable experience in developing positive theories of social phenomena is required. Applicants will submit a short research proposal that must address any theoretical question raised in the project description and/or the book, Democracy Administered, linked above. The proposal will be evaluated according to its rigor, feasibility, and the insights it can provide to the REPGOV project. Applicants must have excellent English language skills (i.e., both oral and written fluency). The start date will be no later than 15 June 202

Review of applications will begin on February 4, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled.

Applications must be submitted via email to the REPGOV project manager, Dr. Alba Solà-Garcia (asola@ibei.org). Each application should include:

  • A motivation letter (1 page).
  • A current CV.
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A research proposal (2500-3000 words).
