Vacancy | Assistant Professor in International Political Economy and Quantitative Methods

The Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure track) position specializing in International Political Economy, with a focus on quantitative approaches. This position is part of IBEI’s strategic initiative to enhance its research and teaching capacity in these fields, offering an excellent opportunity for scholars with strong academic credentials, an active research agenda, and a commitment to high-quality teaching.

Position Details

  • Title: Assistant Professor in International Political Economy.
  • Institution: Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI).
  • Location: Barcelona, Spain.
  • Contract Type: Full-time tenure track position (37,5 hours per week).
  • Expected Start Date: September 2025.
  • Gross annual salary: to be resolved according to the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop the following activities:

  • Teaching: Design and deliver master's-level courses  employing innovative pedagogical approaches that integrate theoretical and empirical perspectives.
  • Research: Seek external research funding from competitive sources and actively contribute to academic and policy-oriented debates. Conduct and publish high-impact research in leading academic journals and books.
  • Academic Collaboration: Engage in interdisciplinary research projects, fostering synergies across international relations, political science and/or economics, and contribute to IBEI’s research activities.
  • Supervision & Mentorship: Supervise Master’s dissertations and research projects, and provide mentorship to graduate students, guiding their academic and professional development.
  • External Engagement: Actively contribute to academic and policy-oriented debates.

 Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • PhD in Political Economy, Political Science, International Relations, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, with experience in higher education in fields related to International Political Economy and Quantitative Methods.
  • Strong research track record, with a commitment to publishing in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Advanced proficiency in quantitative methods, including data analysis and policy evaluation techniques.

  • Job Market Paper / Writing Sample – A representative research paper (published or working paper) demonstrating analytical skills and methodological expertise.

Selection Process

  • Stage 1: A selection committee of internal and external members will remotely assess candidates based on scientific publications, research funding, teaching experience, and alignment with the preferred specializations.
  • Stage 2: Shortlisted candidates will present a public research seminar and attend interviews at IBEI, with the option for online participation if necessary.
