The Research Master's in International Studies is an interdisciplinary 120-ECTS credit programme that combines the study of complex problems in international politics and related areas, with a strong focus on research methods in Social Sciences. This two-year Master’s programme intends to prepare policy analysts and researchers in different areas of international studies, providing them with advanced methods training and research skills that would enable them to develop or consolidate their professional and academic careers. This Master’s offers excellent preparation to successfully pursue a PhD programme in International Relations, Development studies, Public Policy or Political Science.

During the first year of the programme, the Research Master’s in International Studies combines theory and practice, providing students with extensive knowledge of the different fields of international studies, including academic and professional perspectives. In addition to core courses, over 50 electives in international studies are taught every year by leading academics and an array of distinguished international scholars. In the second year of the programme, students are trained in advanced research methods, including innovative analytical techniques and sophisticated software tools. The sum of the two-year study will be applied towards a 30-ECTS credit Master’s Final Research Project (Thesis), to be written during the last semester of the Master’s.

IBEI’s teaching model is organised around lectures, seminars and small tutorials. Class sizes are capped and candidates are expected to actively participate in the classroom activities in the form of presentations, group work and written assignment. In addition, students are assigned a personal tutor and their progress is monitored throughout the academic year. IBEI also develops transferable skills that students can apply in their future international careers. In addition, students have the opportunity to engage with visiting scholars, international officials, government experts and practitioners who regularly give public lectures and research seminars at IBEI.
