In this course, we will go over several data visualization principles and techniques using the R statistical programming language. We will cover key concepts that ensure that our visualizations are truthful, compelling, and reproducible. The overall goal is to tell data-backed stories to a wide audience in a creative and rigorous manner. You will collect data on a topic of your interest (related to international politics) and present it in a final project which contains your visuals and the methods you used to produce them. This is a heavily practical and interactive course, students are expected to bring their laptops and to participate regularly during the seminar sections, as well as to bring their own data during the practice section.

Evaluación

Each session will be divided into three sections. In the first segment, there will be a lecture on the week’s topic, followed by a short Q&A session. When possible, guest talks from practitioners will supplement the lectures. In the second segment, we will have a seminar-style discussion introduced by a presentation from a member of the class. In the third segment, we will cover practical examples with R, as well as in-class exercises. Prior knowledge of R is helpful but not required. Familiarity with basic statistical concepts is expected.

• Assignments (40%: 2 total, 20% each)
• Final Project (40%: 20% visuals, 20% script)
