ACADEMIC GUIDELINES FOR THE MASTER’S IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS (SHORT VERSION)

1. Admissions

  • Admission is open to any student who meets the general admission requirements governing admittance to officially accredited Master’s degree programmes and, where applicable, the specific requirements set by the Barcelona Institute of International Studies (IBEI).
  • Any student holding a foreign Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, that has not yet been accredited in Spain must, when applying, formally request recognition of the degree’s equivalence to a corresponding degree in Spain.
  • The request for recognition of equivalence must be accompanied by supporting documentation specified in the full version of Academic Guidelines for the Master’s in International Relations.  (download PDF file)
  • Admission decisions for the programme are made by an admissions committee made up of the Graduate Dean, the programme coordinator of the Master’s in International Relations, an IBEI faculty member and a faculty member in the Master’s programme itself.
  • All required application materials must be provided at the time of application. 

2. Enrolment, Fees and Reinstatement

  • Admission is contingent upon verification of the application information submitted by the applicant and upon adherence to the payment schedule set by the programme.
  • Enrolment must be completed in the time limits set by the Master’s programme.
  • Student tuition is set annually by the IBEI Foundation.
  • Tuition fees will be paid in a single payment at the start of the academic year.
  • A student can cancel enrolment during the first 20 days of the academic year.  Requests for cancellation must be submitted to the director of the Master’s programme.
  • The IBEI can cancel enrolment of a student for non-payment or partial payment of tuition fees.
  • Cancellation of a student’s enrolment by the IBEI does not entail the return of any fees paid.
  • Students must complete all credits specified by the Master’s programme in International Relations.
  • The minimum student number required to run elective courses in the Master’s programme is five students.  Courses will not exceed 25 students. 
  • Reinstatement must be formally requested by any student who has failed to enrol in subsequent years and wishes to return to the Master’s programme in International Relations at the IBEI.

3. Assessment

  • Students are entitled to evaluation in all subjects taken as part of the Master’s programme in International Relations. 
  • Evaluation may be carried out through a final examination, a thesis project, a process of continuous assessment, and/or any other means which would permit assessment of a student’s effort and progress.
  • Students are entitled to two formal review meetings: 
    • Ordinary assessment occurs during the term of enrolment in a given subject
    • Extraordinary assessment occurs in July in the same academic year.
  • Plagiarism is strictly prohibited as is the multiple use of coursework in different courses.
  • Members of the IBEI community have an obligation to notify the Graduate Dean of any misconduct (eg, plagiarism and multiple use of coursework).
  • Students who successfully complete the 60 credits that comprise the programme will be conferred the degree of Master in International Relations, awarded jointly by the Institute, the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Pompeu Fabra University.
  • Students who complete 75% of the required and elective (?3) credits in the Master’s programme in International Relations will be eligible for the Diploma in International Relations, awarded by the Institute. 

4. Maintaining Enrolment Eligibility

  • Successful completion of 60% of all credits taken in an academic year is necessary to remain in the Master’s programme  in International Relations.

5. Marking System

The marking system to be used in the Master’s programme in International Relations corresponds to the system set out in article 5 of the Royal Decree 1125/2003 of 5th September, which implemented the European system of credits and the marking system for official and valid university degree programmes throughout Spain.

6. Academic Record

  • Students who have completed all the credits necessary to obtain the degree of Master in International Relations will have expunged from their academic record any elective subjects or development activities that were not completed successfully.
  • Graduating students will be given a copy of their transcript with their Master’s degree.  Additional copies may be subject to a fee.
