Since its inauguration in 2004, the Master in International Relations, offered by the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI), has consolidated itself, both in Spain and abroad, as a leading postgraduate institution offering a solid academic preparation for students intending to pursue a career in one of the social, political and economic domains of international relations.

With the vital support of public institutions and the active implication of a large group of academic staff from various universities in Barcelona, we have built an attractive postgraduate programme which combines academic rigour with a practical approach to the important problems in the international scenario. The programme also strives to maintain a personalized approach to ensure close contact among all members of the IBEI community.

Our students remember their year at IBEI, one of intense dedication to the study of international relations, as a period in their lives in which they learned to reflect on the problems of our world in a more profound, complex and informed manner. In short, as a former student recently told me, “to see the world in a different way”. What they learned at IBEI will remain with them for the rest of their lives and I hope that it will have enriched them both professionally and personally. Notwithstanding, the contribution of the IBEI faculty to their learning process, the experience at IBEI is also to large extent an achievement of the students themselves. The range of academic and geographical backgrounds in combination with the bilingual character of the programme has contributed to the development of a very international environment.

The Master is an interdisciplinary programme where students gain an insight into politics, law and economics, but where they are also offered the opportunity to specialise in particular sub-fields to the study of international politics. Our programme also aims to provide students with the skills they will require to develop their professional careers in the international arena, be that diplomacy, international organizations or the private sector, to mention only a few of the fields in which IBEI ex-alumni are currently working.
