HNMUN

After an amazing trip to Boston and New York the IBEIMUN team has returned to Barcelona and we would like to use this opportunity to thank all those who have helped to make our project possible, by assisting us with the training activities or the various fundraising activities. Moreover, the IBEIMUN would like to thank the IBEI and Harvard University for their generous financial assistance. Without all this support, our project would not have been able to be successful.

The IBEIMUN team has been working under heavy financial and time constraints, but feels it has certainly been worth it. HNMUN 2009 provided the IBEIMUN team with a unique opportunity to develop key skills in debate, negotiation and international politics. Team members have managed to get over the personal barriers that can be involved with participating in one of the oldest and most prestigious simulation of the United Nations – most notable speaking in public. But most of all, it has been a lot of fun, meeting new people, learning more about international decision making and relevant international issues.

In short, participating in the challenging and motivating 2009 HNMUN has been an unforgettable experience, both from an educational point a view, and from a personal one.

We certainly enjoyed every bit of it!

On behalf of the IBEIMUN team,

AGENDA

Harvard here we come!

It is my pleasure to announce that the IBEIMUN's application to participate in the 2009 Conference of the Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) has been accepted by Harvard University.

The IBEIMUN team has been working tirelessly in the past few weeks, under heavy time and financial constraints, to start up our project.  We are therefore very pleased that our efforts have been approved upon and that our delegation has been assigned to represent the country of Sierra Leone.

In Boston our delegation members will represent the interest of Sierra Leone in the following committees: the African Union, the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the Development Cooperation Forum, the Disarmament and Security Committee, the Historical General Assembly: 1967, the Legal Committee, the Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee, the Special Political and Decolonization Committee, the World Health Organization, and the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

In order to prepare ourselves, we have recently started our intensive training program, which has been carefully organized by our Training Committee, with in-depth presentations on the structure and functioning of the United Nations (UN), as well as the ins and outs of a Model United Nations (MUN), paying particular attention to its Rules of Procedure. Moreover, the IBEIMUN delegates have started putting their knowledge and skills to practice in a simulation game.

Kind regards,

Léonie van Tongeren

Head of Delegation

Barcelona, October 2008

Welcome,

At the start of the 2008-2009 academic year of the Master in International Relations of the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) a group of enthusiastic students has decided to make the upcoming year even more challenging by participating in the Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) that will be held in Boston in February 2009.

This will be the IBEIMUN’s first chance to participate in the international conference, which each year draws over 3000 delegates from over 30 countries around the world to participate in this real life simulation, discussing the latest issues in the field of international relations. HNMUN is the oldest and most prestigious simulation of its kind and the IBEIMUN delegation members would like to use this opportunity to learn more about the United Nations and international affairs, share their opinions with students from around the world, and become active global citizens.

Although putting our knowledge into practice in a thrilling international environment will certainly be a uniquely valuable educational experience, forming a delegation means lots of preparation work. However, due to our cultural diversity and backgrounds in various disciplines such as international politics, international law, economics and social areas, the IBEIMUN delegation sincerely believes to be up for the challenges that are set by the high standards of the HNMUN.

In order to prepare ourselves for the challenges ahead all delegation members will take part in an intensive training program, developing expertise in important areas, such as public speaking, resolution drafting, lobbying, and negotiating. Additionally, we will be actively fundraising to make the trip to the United States possible.

On this website we will keep you updated on the progress that is made by IBEIMUN. Feel free to browse around!

Kind regards,

On behalf of IBEIMUN 2008-2009,

Léonie van Tongeren
